Festivals in Catalonia often feature castels, which are human towers constructed by teams of castellers – castle builders. The activity, recognized by UNESCO as part of the “intangible cultural heritage of humanity”, includes the construction of numerous different kinds of towers. The upper parts of the towers are composed of smaller, lighter individuals, often children. The enxaneta, who climbs to the very top of the tower and signals its completion, may be as young as seven or eight.
